Raquel Smith

We wanted to take a second to remember Raquel "Rocky-babylove" who just passed away from cancer earlier this week.  We interviewed her a few years ago when we traveled to New Orleans for the documentary.  She was a dynamic woman with a great sense of humor and the bravery to share her story on camera. 

This sad news is a reminder of why we made this film, and why we will keep on fighting to raise awareness until we eventually have a cure to #endwomenscancers.  Rest in peace, Raquel.

Thank You for Helping N.E.D. Make an Impact!

2015 has been a big year for No Evidence of Disease (N.E.D.), thanks to your generous support of the documentary and its engagement campaign. 

We are proud and encouraged by the number of people who have supported us in our journey to spread awareness of below-the-belt cancers. We wanted to share some of the highlights of the impact you made:

N.E.D. premiered on PBS World Channel on March 4th and is currently featured on American Public Television's airwaves, where it will continue to be broadcast for years to come. A Spanish language version has also aired on Vme TV. 

To date, there have been over 2,200 broadcasts on public television. That is a potential audience of 230 million people!

On World Cancer Day (February 4th), we partnered with Regal Cinemas to screen the film in 45 cinemas across the U.S. and Canada. Each screening was accompanied by a discussion and Q&A with advocates and health professionals. In addition to the World Cancer Day release, N.E.D. has screened in over 150 communities and in theaters across the world, often targeting underserved populations that do not have access to this vital information. 

With your support, we produced an informative multimedia companion: What Every Woman Should Know, a 16-minute video on the signs and symptoms of all major GYN cancers. The video is available online free-of-charge and is also divided into separate modules on each disease state. It is also available in English, Spanish and Arabic. To accompany this video, we created a free guide that lists questions every woman should ask on her annual visit to the gynecologist. The guide is available in print and online. 

The film is now available On Demand and digital download. The rhythmically charged soundtrack is available here. Proceeds go towards our continuing efforts to raise awareness. 

Our work on N.E.D. led to our partnership with the Globe-athon to End Women's Cancers, the world's first international grassroots effort to unify women's cancer awareness efforts by staging walks, parades, and other events across the globe. With over 80 participating countries worldwide, N.E.D. has truly become the soundtrack of the movement!

Together, we've made a crack in the wall of silence that surrounds below-the-belt cancers. With your help, we will be able to go even further.

Globe-athon in the Caribbean

As many of you know, our work on No Evidence of Disease and What Every Woman Should Know has led to other opportunities to help break the wall of silence surrounding below-the-belt cancers.  We are particularly proud of our work with the Globe-athon to End Women’s Cancers, where we have been part of the core team since the beginning and continue to spearhead their media production, social media and outreach. 

Now in its third year, Globe-athon is dedicated to unifying communities around the world to raise awareness of GYN cancers.  This year, almost 80 countries participated by hosting walks, parades, health screenings or lectures. We are so inspired by everyone’s hard work and dedication to bringing awareness to below-the-belt cancers. Click here to watch video highlights from Globe-athon 2015. 

On Labor Day, the Globe-athon participated in the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) Parade – a huge event that regularly brings 2 to 3 million people to Brooklyn every year.  Following Globe-athon’s custom float, over a thousand dancers, survivors, doctors and medical students marched down Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway, led by the Queen of Soca, Alison Hinds.

Women who inspired us: Carey Fitzmaurice

As GYN cancer awareness month comes to an end, we celebrate the work and life of our dear friend Carey Fitzmaurice who passed away this summer.  While dealing with ovarian cancer, Carey founded what was to become a nationally recognized non-profit organization, Teal Toes.  With the very simple idea of painting your toe nails teal, Carey managed to get conversations started and raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.

Carey was a strong supporter of N.E.D. - both the band and the film.  From the very beginning, she believed in the power of music to heal.  And, she believed that the documentary would further the awareness message on a wide scale.   To the end, even though she was in the hospital, Carey let us bring our camera into her room for an interview.

GYN cancer month is coming to a close, but we won’t stop advocating. Carey was a spirited and beautiful fighter until her passing, and we are inspired by all that she did.

N.E.D. OVEE 9/16

Last night WHUT-TV hosted a live OVEE online screening of No Evidence of Disease. There was a panel featuring three special guests – Andrea Kalin, Director and Producer of the film, Dr. Larry Maxwell, MD, Founder of the Globe-athon and Chair of the OB/GYN Department at Inova Fairfax; and Dicey Scroggins, one of the leading advocates for GYN cancer awareness and combating health disparities.

Viewers were able to chat online during the film, share stories, and get questions answered. It was an emotional and eye opening discussion, where no question was off limits.

Let's Be The Change

Expressing thoughts into words is hard when your thoughts are so vivid & feel so great that no words can describe them and no words can justify the feelings. First I attended an awesome Flash Mob event for Globe-athon. Globe-athon really caught my eye because it’s the only international movement focused on the prevention and early detection of all gynecological cancers. It was pouring rain when I got to the event! That didn’t stop us from embracing the event.  I got to meet cancer survivors and better yet go to shake out some cool dance moves with them. Who wouldn't want to dance in front of the Lincoln Memorial and for a great cause.

Three words..."win win situation.”  Oh and....I love dancing too!  It was seriously amazing. I loved being part of it and honestly can say it was one of the best experiences I've ever been a part of. I also got on TV for a short bit, showing off my dance moves…that was very cool. I’ll pass my autographs out in near future. Just Kidding.

After the flash Mob I was invited by the amazing director Andrea Kalin, to a wonderful film "No Evidence of Disease." Yes, that's when my life changed. Forever.   I learned so much about gynecological cancers, which I would never knew about. I came from a very conservative family and we never spoke about anything related to female private stuff........well except our "monthly visitors"....but that's about it.  After watching the movie, I learned about cancer prevention. I learned how life is precious and we need to take care of ourselves. This movement is about gaining awareness of Gynecological Cancers, and not being afraid to talk openly about it.  After these events, I assured myself that I would always go and get checkups. Even if you don’t feel something is wrong, you should still check.

Sometimes you just need someone or something to influence you to make your life better and that's what the N.E.D & Globe-athon did for me. Thank you. Continue to be amazing, we need people like you to make this world a better place.

A Twist of Fate: Stories from the Crowd!

We love hearing from our screening hosts and audience members! Though we have to say, the stories we receive are not usually so spooky and touching at the same time... Here's an email we received recently from a screening host:

“I received the N.E.D. DVDs and postcards and put them in my car the night before our team was going to meet up to discuss our planning of the event. That night my car was broken into! The thief or thieves ransacked my car! The thief opened the N.E.D. envelope, ripped open the DVD inner envelope, must have seen what the postcards and DVDs said on them...then carefully put the DVDs back in and attempted to but the package back together nicely. They then left all our other items in the car, they left my valuables! The package must have touched him or her in some way to leave my car alone after that.”

Can you believe it? We're thankful that this thief had a heart, and hope they pay it forward.

This is a story about cancer.

This is a story about cancer.

In fact, its a story about a cancer that I will never have.

But, this story is about the 50% of people in the country who do have to worry about these cancers. And it is about the failure of us to inform and educate the women who are dangerously at risk.

Women’s reproductive cancers are responsible for upwards of 30,000 deaths each year in the United States. How is it that a movie brought this to my attention when I am 20?

These cancers: Cervical, Ovarian, Vaginal, and uvular are not cancers that we think about often.  I have not seen an awareness campaign with ribbons and shirts with races of ten of thousands of people.  Say what you will about Susan G. Komen Foundation but, they brought breast cancer to the front of people’s mind and made it acceptable to have conversations about the disease. 

But, why should I care about these cancers when I cannot get them? Why should it matter to me as a healthy 20 year old, with plenty of other things to think about besides this unknown cancer?

For me, it is about the ones that I love.  I may be a man but, I have a mother, a sister, and many many close friends, all who mean so much to me.  If I were to loose them to one of these cancers, especially from poor screening availability or just not thinking it would be a problem, I would be outraged.  Too many people are forced to go through a similar experience to my nightmare.  No more nightmares need to be had.

Remember that fighting cancer is not just something that a doctor can do. We can all take a part by donations, supporting those fighting, and starting conversations.  Especially the difficult ones.

N.E.D. is Back in the Studio!

It's official! N.E.D. (No Evidence of Disease) has been back in the studio and busy working on a new album!! Rock on!

Getting their new album off to a good start, our favorite band of rockin' GYN oncologists will be coming to New Orleans for two nights of events in August! On Friday, August 15, 2014, N.E.D. the Movie will be showing at 7pm at Cafe Istanbul in the New Orleans Healing Center, followed by a Q&A with the band. Saturday, August 16, 2014 will feature N.E.D. in performance, with opening act, the Shinolas. Doors open at 7pm. After the show, VIP patrons will meet and greet the band at a catered special event on site. Full Bar will be available at both events. Tickets will go on sale soon, thru the Tulane Cancer Center website.

No Evidence of Disease Goes Down Under!

It’s Opening Night at The Big Picture Film Festival in Sydney, Australia! The Big Picture marks No Evidence of Disease’s Australian premiere and its first major international film festival!

Big Picture Film Festival is a “unique, boutique collection” of some of the most inspiring new documentary and fiction films from around the world. Founded by Bill Crews in 2013, the Festival shines a spotlight on films and people who have taken a stand against social inequality. It is the only social justice-themed film festival in Australia, with a mission not only to entertain and inform but also to inspire action.

Cancer Doesn't Mean You Can't Have a Child

Because we have great doctors and surgeons like N.E.D. who are fighting cancer so aggressively, patients not only survive, but now can enjoy life after cancer.  As a Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility Specialist, we help women and couples who are struggling with infertility to have a family.   After I saw N.E.D. the Movie, I wanted to add my own “What every woman should know about her fertility after cancer.” 

Every woman should know that, YES!  Having a family IS possible after cancer and cancer treatment.  While every woman and every diagnosis is different, women can also take steps with egg or embryo banking that preserves their fertility in time before they undergo treatment that might threaten their fertility.  Together with their oncologist, when you decide you are ready and healthy again to become a mother, you can try to conceive on your own, or use your stored eggs or embryos.   If you did not have the opportunity or time to bank eggs or embryos before your treatment, having a family may still be possible after cancer with advancements in IVF or even using an egg donor. 

One of my patients, “A.N.”, was a 37-year old female without any children.  She had just been diagnosed with cancer and was facing chemotherapy in the near future. We would expect chemotherapy to stop her periods, and at her age, it would be uncertain whether her periods would resume or whether she would be fertile after treatment.  She and her husband came to us for consultation, and together with her oncologists we chose to harvest eggs, create embryos, and freeze them for the future.  After she received treatment for cancer, she and her doctors decided it was safe for her to become pregnant.  At this time, she would have been otherwise infertile, but in using her frozen embryos she went on to have a healthy baby girl. 

Another patient of mine, “E.K.”, was a 34-year old recently diagnosed with endometrial cancer who was facing a hysterectomy and chemotherapy in the near future.  Before treatment, we were able to harvest her eggs, create embryos, and freeze them for the future.  These embryos will be transferred into another woman known as a gestational carrier, who will carry her pregnancy for her.  So even though she has had a hysterectomy, she will likely still be able to be a mother to her own genetic child. 

For women facing a new diagnosis of cancer, you are scared.   Scared that you cannot live your own life, and also scared that you may not be able to become a mother after treatment. There are options.  There is hope.  What every woman should know, is that with advancements in reproductive medicine such dreams can and DO become a reality.

She Made Her Godmother Smile

After going to the theater with friends to see the documentary N.E.D., I came home and hugged my kids (my sister's nieces), perhaps tighter then I ever had before. The film brought out emotions that I'd buried away, deep enough that when roused, brought tears and perhaps too much familiarity, considering the passage of time. I guess that's the mark of a well done film. A film that I'd like to see go viral (though, I wouldn't suggest it for a date night). The intent of the documentary was to raise awareness for gynecologic cancers. It followed gynecologic oncologist doctors, both as practicing physicians and musicians. In the latter role, they were bringing awareness and healing; the former, depicted the reality of the disease that so randomly, yet decisively, kills over 14,000 women in the US every year. What are the odds, that 1 of those 14,000 could be your child's godmother? Their aunt? Your sister at the age of 41... It happened to us in 2008, which is precisely why I embraced my kids so tightly when I came home. As I left the theater tonight, my friend was distributing pamphlets with the warning signs of ovarian cancer, I graciously declined. She knew that I was well aware already, having learned from loss (as did she with the loss of her mom). Hug your kids, talk to your siblings, raise a toast with a girlfriend... make some noise in honor of Eileen. I only wish that we'd known the signs... On a lighter note, my nine year old reminded me that "at least Aunt Eileen is having a good time in heaven."  With that, I'm certain, she made her godmother smile!

It's that time of year again to look back and reflect on the year behind us, the victories and the losses, the relationships forged and the moments we will never forget. As we think back on everything the No Evidence of Disease team has achieved over the past year, MAN are we PROUD of the NOISE we made for GYN Cancer!

2013 marked the completion of the No Evidence of Disease documentary, the culmination of three years worth of production shoots, interviews, research, and heart-rending experiences as we dove into the world of women's cancers. We were proud to announce the film's acceptance to the Rocky Mountain Women's Film Festival and the LA Femme International Film Festival this Fall, and thrilled to team up with Tugg.com to screen the film in dozens of theaters and communities around the country. We've also taken on some other initiatives this year to continue our mission of raising awareness for GYN cancers. As part of the core team of Globe-athon: The Walk to End Women's Cancers, we spearheaded the branding and digital media development for a new and exciting worldwide cancer awareness movement. We've also released a short educational film, available here, called What Every Woman Should Know, which educates and empowers women about their gynecologic health. 2013 has been an incredibly busy year, and this barely scratches the surface!
